Message of the Month by Pastor Paul October 2020
Heroes of the Faith - Nick Vujicic
About 7 years ago my wife and I were visiting some very dear friends in the south of England for the weekend. They were attending the same church that I had joined many years before, after I had received the baptism in the Holy Spirit at the age of 18.
We went with our friends to the Sunday morning service and I can’t remember what the
Pastor’s preaching was about but I do remember the way he chose to end it. He showed a video clip of Nick Vujicic (pronounced Voy-a-chich) speaking - and it made me cry.
I had never heard of Nick before, but as many of you will know, he was born with no arms or legs yet he is one of the most positive people I have ever come across, with a dynamic personality and a wonderful sense of humour. Nick’s life and testimony has touched millions
of people as he travels around the world sharing his story.
Although he is so positive now, it has not always been that way. Nick is an overcomer. He has not only overcome his disability to the point where he can surfboard and do many other sports activities, but as a child and then particularly as a teenager, he had to overcome prejudice
and rejection, disappointment and depression to the point where he seriously wanted to end
his own life.
Nick was born into a Christian family in Australia in 1982 and although it was a terrible shock
to his parents, they were wonderfully loving, supportive and wise in dealing with each aspect
of his growth and development. He is now married and together with his lovely wife, they have four beautiful children and live in California USA.
I have been reading his book, Life Without Limits which is one of a number of books he has written and as I have done so, he has made me cry again, because from all the things that he has had to contend with - he has gained wisdom and insight beyond his years. I recommend the book to you but here are a few quotes from it:
“You may not control what happens to you but you can control how you respond.”
“Only God knows how our lives will unfold. Hope is His gift to us, a window to look through… keep hope in your heart and even when faced with the worst, do whatever you can to prepare yourself for the best!”
“Life without hope has no faith. If you find a way to contribute, you will find your meaning, and hope and faith will naturally follow and accompany you into your future.”
“Have the courage to pursue your own dreams, and never doubt your ability to meet whatever challenges come your way.”
“Take a look in the mirror right now and say ‘This is who I am and I accept the challenge of becoming the best I can be.’ You are beautiful because God created you for His purpose.
Your challenge is to find that purpose, fuel it with HOPE, drive it on FAITH, and put your
you-uniqueness to the highest possible use.”
Nick is an overcomer and by his own testimony that is by the grace of God alone. As another
of my heroes - Jack Hayford once said:
“You can’t be an overcomer without having things to overcome.”
So, whatever you have to contend with today - or in the future – remember how Nick became an overcomer and better still, remember what Jesus has promised to those who overcome:
the world,
the flesh and
the devil!
To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God. (Revelation 2:7)
He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death. (Revelation 2:11)
To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, , and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it. (Revelation 2:17)
And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations. (Revelation 2:26)
He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. (Revelation 3:5)
He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name. (Revelation 3:12)
To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. (Revelation 3:21)
Nick is one of my heroes of the Faith and for sure I will be in line to give him a big hug when
we finally get to heaven!
